First of all, and one of the main reasons I recommend an actual jeweler instead of Wal-Mart for instance, be sure that what you are looking at is actual silver, and not just silver plated. A real silver necklace will advertise this and a good jeweler will be able to show you how much silver there is. Also, consider that silver plated jewelry will tarnish much more easily than the real thing. Real silver loves to be used as this helps prevent tarnishing.
Another thing to think about is what the purpose of the silver necklace actually is. Those among you that have been paying attention might say, "to be worn!" Of course, but consider when it will be worn most often. Is this a piece you're getting for a specific occasion, such as a wedding, dinner or something formal? Or is it going to be worn on a daily basis, everything from work to after hours clubs and on dates?
And once you've figured that out, here is the most important tip I can give you and one you should never forget: do not just focus on the silver. Focus on the presentation, that is keep in mind the type of necklace and setting you want. It does little to have everything else figured out and then pick the wrong necklace. With the amount of choice you have for settings, you would do well to give this serious thought, as the right choice will enable the wearer to get as much out of a silver necklace as possible, no matter what they do.
